Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms And Why You Need Medical Help

Introduction

Most people who give up alcohol suddenly end up experiencing mild to moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms as a result of the body reacting to the sudden withdrawal of something that it was used to or dependent on. The term alcohol withdrawal syndrome is used for describing the whole group of symptoms that occur as a result of sudden withdrawal from alcohol after a prolonged period of consumption.

Almost everybody who stops drinking after a long period of alcohol consumption or those who are heavy or frequent drinkers of alcohol will experience some or the entire varied group of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Types of Symptoms

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms range from the mild and the moderate to the extreme and the severe. Therefore, it is generally advised that you consult a medical practitioner before giving up alcohol all of a sudden. This is because while you might get away with just a few mild and easily controllable symptoms, you might also end up suffering from severe ones, and nobody can predict how exactly an individual’s body will react to sudden withdrawal.

In case you are planning to or have already given up alcohol, then you might find yourself experiencing some mild or moderate physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. Some of the moderate physical symptoms are nausea, vomiting and headache, clammy or sweaty palms, a loss of appetite and sleep, palpitations or an increased heart rate, paleness, enlarged or dilated pupils, involuntary movement of the eyes and eyelids, shaking or shivering hands and excessive sweating.

Psychological Symptoms

Apart from these, a person giving up alcohol consumption also experiences a number of mild to moderate mental or psychological symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Some of the most common alcohol withdrawal symptoms in this regard are states of nervousness or anxiety, mood swings, irritability and emotional volatility, feelings of fatigue, shakiness, depression, an inability to think clearly and cohesively and a series of nightmares or bad dreams.

Most of the symptoms that are mentioned above can be easily treated with outpatient monitoring and medication. However, there are a number of severe withdrawal symptoms that require that the patient is admitted to a health facility and monitored and treated round the clock.

Some of the most common severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms are hallucinations, fevers, convulsions and constant agitation. A very severe symptom, known as delirium tremens is a state where a person keeps getting regular hallucinations and is in a confused state of mind. Some people also suffer from black outs, or periods of memory loss, where they are unable to recall about what happened during a certain period of time, especially when this relates to a drinking episode.

Most of the people suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms, especially mild and moderate ones can be treated as outpatients, but there is a small percentage of people, especially those who suffer from severe withdrawal symptoms, who need to be treated in special alcohol rehab centers or hospitals. This is because they would require round the clock observation and attention because of the severity of their symptoms.

Conclusion

In case you or someone else close to you is experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms, then it is advised that you consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible. The practitioner will let you know about the severity of your symptoms, and treat you accordingly. Most probably, you can be treated with some prescribed medication that you can take on your own, but in case the symptoms are severe then you would need to be admitted to a medical facility for treatment. Most people turn back to alcohol because they cannot bear the withdrawal symptoms; therefore it is imperative that a patient takes medical help with respect to his or her withdrawal symptoms so as not to fall back into the abyss of alcoholism.

Water and Alcohol

Water constitutes 60 per cent of your body. It is present in your skin, hair and even in your teeth and bones. Water acts as a universal solvent that dissolves minerals and other compounds and carries them throughout your body. Water carries nutrients and other necessary building materials to each cell in the body, besides being an integral part of the cells themselves. Water is critical to the body’s chemical reactions and also removes impurities from the blood stream and vital organs.

Water acts as an ideal cushion between joints, organs and sensitive tissues. It maintains pressure on the optic nerves enabling vision, helps to stabilize blood pressure and regulate body temperature. It also cools the body by getting converted into water vapour due to body heat.

Did you know that your body loses about 1,000 ml of water daily through sweating and by passing urine? This amount needs to be replenished daily by drinking fluids and food that contain moisture. Drinking eight glasses of water a day is a must to keep the cleaning and cooling systems of the body in prime condition.

Alcohol

Unfortunately, drinking is too often associated with hard liquor, beer or wine. However, it is wiser to opt for non-alcoholic beverages and water. Juices and squashes are better than aerated drinks. If you do drink alcohol, it should be in moderation. One drink means a small peg of hard liquor, a single cocktail, or a glass or two of wine or beer. But remember to eat before you consume alcohol. Ifyou have not eaten for the last couple of hours, the liver’s capacity to handle liquor will diminish, thereby increasing the effect of alcohol on your body.

For most people, two drinks in less than an hour will affect their judgment. After four standard drinks, a person loses all emotional control and eight drinks will affect your vision. Any more than this and the person could go totally haywire.

If you are hoping to lose weight, then your daily wine is a soul mate you can do without. Whether you like it or not, the fact remains that alcohol is fattening. Before you guzzle some more, cast an eye on the number of calories you take in with each sip. On an average, a peg of whiskey has 97 calories while a vodka martini will add anywhere between 105-125 calories to your frame. If you are fond of liquers, be prepared for at least 75-100 calories and with beer, anywhere between 90-145 calories.

While alcohol consumed in moderate quantities i.e. controlled and regulated drinking, is an accepted part of urban lifestyles today and may not necessarily be harmful, the consumption of excess liquor can be extremely damaging to one’s health as well as one’s mental equilibrium.

Alcoholism Treatment Success

If you are thinking about seeking treatment for alcohol problems, either for yourself or someone else, probably no question matters quite as much as the odds of any treatment being successful. The process is expensive – in time, money, and emotion – and as with any life-changing undertaking, it would be nice to know that success was likely.

Unhappily, despite wild claims to the contrary, “success” is hardly guaranteed.

Scan through treatment program web sites and literature and you would think that positive results were the rule. They aren’t. Most clients will relapse within months, if not days, of ending treatment.

Problems with the advertising are nearly universal and the most common is the definition of “success.” Press very hard and most programs will eventually admit that their numbers are based on things like: “client was not noticeably intoxicated while in residence,” or “client completed thirty day stay,” or “self-reports indicate…” and so on. Additionally, most programs don’t factor in clients who drop out or never report. Obviously, the numbers are skewed in every way possible to create the appearance of predictable and successful results.

Frankly, if all the research you do is to follow the revolving door relapses of celebrities through the most expensive programs, you will get a more reliable estimate of program effectiveness than you’ll get from the hype.

When it’s your problem – and time, money, and emotion – you might want to take a hard look and develop some realistic expectations. Leaving alcohol problems behind isn’t a lot different than other major behavioral change and success involves similar processes.

You’ll need good, comprehensive assessments of many aspects of your life so that contributing factors can be taken into account. You’ll want attention paid to your strengths and interests because these are the things that will make change worthwhile. Focusing on a “disease” and a single fix is a recipe for relapse. So is quick. Firmly establishing real change takes a year or so – but that’s far less than the often-prescribed “lifelong recovery.”

Good counselors will also work with you to reach your goals, whether abstinence, moderation, or exploring what options are possible for you. Your goals. Not theirs. Again, whether you are modifying your alcohol use, losing weight, stopping smoking, or managing Type II Diabetes, the results will depend on your motivation and your investment, and, yes, in you developing and feeling that an altered life is more rewarding than the current one.

So, ask questions and dont be sucked in by hype and glib assurances. Don’t fall for fancy addresses, gourmet cuisine, and astronomical bills. Look for settings and staff who reflect what you hope to attain. Are they listening? Do they hear, and care, about what you want? Is their assessment of your situation realistic?

There are no magic cures or easy fixes, but there are positive changes that lead to far better lives. Pick carefully when selecting guides to get you there.

Alcohol Withdrawal Treatment

Alcohol withdrawal treatment is a very important step in an alcoholic’s recovery. It consists of weaning the alcoholic from his or her addictive substance, in this case alcohol. Sometimes people will want to go through this phase alone, but that is never recommended. Alcohol withdrawal treatment is available as either inpatient or outpatient, but should never be attempted without some sort of medical oversight.

Alcohol withdrawal can have severe side effects, and these cannot be predicted. The last thing you want is to be home alone and go into convulsions. Go through alcohol withdrawal treatment under medical supervision! If you choose to proceed through treatment as an outpatient, a support person or persons will be needed to monitor you and get medical help if your withdrawal symptoms worsen.

Within a treatment program you will be evaluated by qualified medical staff. Alcohol addiction usually brings a host of other medical issues with it. One of the more common is malnutrition, at least in a few areas. Yes, the alcoholic may have a “beer belly”, but he or she has been ingesting alcoholic beverages (empty calories) rather than food with actual nutritional value.

Once nutritional and other medical needs have been assessed, a plan for treatment of the actual alcohol withdrawal symptoms is made. Typically this begins with prescribing a medication to ease cravings for alcohol. Chlordiazepoxide, Librium, and Valium, all of which are central nervous system depressants, are options for this stage. If the alcoholic has a history that indicates seizures are a possibility, one of a family of drugs known as benzodiazepines may be prescribed.

The whole point of alcohol withdrawal treatment is to ease the alcoholic through the symptoms of withdrawal. Of course, any prescription medications for this purpose must not react with alcohol–one of the reasons there are only certain medications recommended for treatment of withdrawal symptoms.

Treatment generally lasts 3 to 5 days, although for severe symptoms it may be longer, especially for patients who have been through repeated detoxifications. Alcohol creates physical effects both on the brain and body. Recent studies indicate that repeated detoxifications may increase cravings and obsessive thoughts. The symptoms exhibited during subsequent detoxifications also appear to worsen.

That’s why, especially for someone who has gone through alcohol withdrawal treatment at least once previously, that medical supervision of some kind is strongly suggested. You’ll be establishing a support group around you for your sobriety. Starting to gather that group during the withdrawal process is just smart thinking.

Does Alcohol Make You Fat?

One of the most common questions anyone who wants to go on a diet or simply maintain their current weight asks is does alcohol make you fat? This article provides an answer to this question, so read it to the end.

The problem with alcohol and fat is that alcohol contains a great deal of sugar and is calorie rich. This sugar quickly turns to fat inside our body. That alcohol induced fat clings to our belly, thighs, arms, and all body parts. The common assumption that alcohol somehow affects belly fat more than on any part of the body is false. Each person has his or her own genetic makeup. This alone determines the body parts which are more prone to accumulate fat.

Overall, men gain more weight in the abdomen, so it’s likely that alcohol would cause belly fat for men. But it’s not different from any other fatty food. Women mostly add fat in the pelvic area, so alcohol will not cause a massive accumulation of belly fat for them. However, it will still add more fat overall.

Because alcohol is calorie and sugar rich, and because it doesn’t make you less hungry, it’s detrimental to weight loss. One of the things it can hurt more than anything is an effort to get a flat stomach or six pack abs, since that requires an overall low body fat percentage.

Alcohol makes you fat only if you drink too much of it. If you want to lose body fat, I recommend that you cut down on your alcohol intake. I’m not suggesting to cut it out entirely. You’re still entitled to enjoy yourself. But cut it down to 1-2 drink when you go out. That should be enough to enjoy yourself but still keep your body fat down.

Alcohol Abuse – The Real Life Effects

Alcohol is a dangerous substance by all accounts. It can be fun in certain situations. Some studies have even shown a glass of wine can improve your health. However, too much of anything can be bad. This is never truer than with alcohol. Alcohol abuse can tear apart your life and your family’s lives.

Sure, you probably looked cool at the party the other night. You may have downed a few beers in a chugging contest with your buddy’s. You may have been the king of the party. People were quite possibly cheering your name. Then the room started to spin. It probably felt pretty cool for a little bit. After a while you probably didn’t feel so good. You then manage to say a few stupid things to people that you shouldn’t say. You might have even hit on your best friend’s girlfriend. Then you officially get sick. Your significant other spends a few hours holding your head over the toilet. The next thing you remember, its morning. Your head is pounding. You spend the rest of the morning drinking as much water as possible. The day is pretty much wasted.

Does this sound familiar? You got sick, looked like an idiot, and managed to anger your best friend. What did you gain? Probably a migraine and a wasted day after the party. Yet, you continually do it week after week.

Hopefully, the above example illustrated to you just how stupid alcohol abuse can be. In moderation, alcohol can be fine. It might help you relax or you may just drink socially. Just be careful not to let a occasional occurrence turn into an addiction. The effects can be devastating. There is no telling how many marriages and families have been broken up over alcohol abuse. It is just not worth the risks involved.

This is not even taking into account the health risks that are involved. If you drink frequently, your liver has to work overtime. When you’re young, this probably doesn’t matter to you. However, when you turn 40 and you need a liver transplant, you’ll definitely regret it. Besides the health effects, it can shorten your life in other ways. Drunk drivers kill more people all the time. People who abuse alcohol are much more likely to get behind the wheel of a car. Therefore, they are much more likely to be involved in an accident. You could die or kill an innocent family. Even if you live, you’ll definitely end up in jail. The risks greatly outweigh the benefits. The next time you decide to party, you may want to think of the consequences.
